Job Description

PURPOSE

The Director, Environmental & Permitting is responsible for leading the development, coordination, and implementation of environmental, permitting, and sustainability strategies across all U.S. sites while contributing to strategy across all properties. This role ensures operational compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements, strengthens ESG performance, and supports responsible development practices. The Director will work closely with site operations, consultants, regulatory agencies, and corporate functions—including Projects and Technical Services—to integrate environmental and social governance principles into every stage of the mine lifecycle, from exploration to closure.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (ACCOUNTABILITIES)

Strategy & Oversight:

  • Develop, plan, and execute corporate environmental and sustainability strategy across all U.S. operations.
  • Tailor environmental and sustainability programs to the unique risks and requirements of each site.
  • Drive the integration of sustainability policies and programs (air, water, waste, hazmat, community engagement) into day-to-day operations.
  • Provide leadership and governance for environmental and permitting initiatives aligned with business objectives and regulatory expectations.

Environmental Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure compliance with all licenses, permits, approvals, and applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Conduct inspections and audits to verify environmental compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Manage compliance-driven enhancements and promote a strong environmental culture across operations.
  • Stay informed of emerging regulations and advise site teams of potential risks or opportunities.

Permitting & Technical Support:

  • Lead the permitting process across U.S. sites, including application preparation, renewals, monitoring reports, and agency liaison.
  • Support environmental studies tied to permitting scenarios, considering engineering constraints, IBA obligations, and community perspectives.
  • Oversee consultants conducting technical studies (e.g., tailings dam inspections, water management, and remediation engineering).
  • Coordinate with Technical Services and Projects to contribute to Feasibility Studies, NI 43-101 reports, and related technical documents.

  • Monitoring, Reporting & Analysis:
  • Conduct and review trend analyses of environmental data to support ESG reporting and compliance performance.
  • Support the preparation of ESG disclosures, board-level presentations, and public reporting.
  • Review site reports such as Dam Safety Reviews, geotechnical inspections, and water/load balances.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements or innovative solutions.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with site teams to support stakeholder engagement and permitting-related outreach.
  • Work with external consultants and regulatory agencies to maintain open communication and effective partnerships.
  • Support engagement with Indigenous groups where applicable in the U.S. context and integrate their input into permitting and planning.

Systems & Process Improvement:

  • Enhance and maintain the corporate environmental and sustainability management system for U.S. operations.
  • Promote awareness of environmental responsibilities and legal requirements among operational staff.
  • Establish process efficiencies, governance protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Lead or support site closure and reclamation planning efforts, including contractor oversight where applicable.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage budgets for environmental and sustainability programs across U.S. operations.
  • Monitor operating costs to ensure alignment with corporate financial objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is required. Additional post-graduate qualifications or relevant certifications are considered beneficial. 15+ years’ working in the environmental or sustainability field, preferably in the mining sector or in a similarly capital-intensive industry sector specifically in the Great Basin is necessary. Knowledge and experience in managing and executing environmental and sustainability programs, permitting, water management planning, waste management, and quality assurance procedures, as well as community engagement, development, and investment strategies to international standards is essential.

A successful track record of managing and implementing best practices in environmental programs in the mining sector or in a similarly capital-intensive industry sector is essential.

Broad familiarity with regulatory environments in the US (specifically in the Great Basin) is necessary. Competence with computer-based programs and tools is required, along with advanced experience within MS Office, including MS Projects.

The Director, Environmental and Permitting will have operated as an executive in a publicly traded company and will bring experience in complex global operations and partnerships. The individual will have a demonstrated commitment to maintaining and protecting the environment and managing sustainability and corporate responsibility aspects of an organization.

ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS

The Director, Environmental and Permitting will report to the EVP & Chief Operating Officer. The Director has no direct reports but does have oversight of all permitting individuals and U.S. sites (from a governance and technical perspective).
