Job Description
Position Summary:
The diagnostic sonographer utilizes high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical diagnosis.
Education, License & Cert:
- High school diploma with additional skills training (certification).
- RVT within 3 years.
Experience:
Minimum of three months (RDMS).
Essential Functions:
1. Performs the scanning examination requested by the referring physician, modifying the examination, depending on the findings demonstrated, and review the examination with the supervising radiologist.
2. Assists the radiologist or the clinician in special procedures such as percutaneous fluid aspiration or biopsy procedures.
3. Performs routine equipment checks for resolution and other quality control procedures, as necessary.
4. Must be able to react quickly to emergency situations such as patient fainting, patient being unsteady while getting on to scanning table, if unsafe situation occurs (such as a fire), getting patient to safety and sounding alarm. Ability to work alone on shift or call and get job done in an efficient manner.
5. Must be able to lift, push, reach, bend, stop and walk in order to care for patients. Must be able to perform a stand‐pivot transfer with a patient.
6. Meets with and keeps Radiology Manager informed of needs, activities, and problems within ultrasound department.
7. Orders, charges and schedules patients in RIS system.
Other Duties:
1. Verifies images of exam and sends to PACS.
2. Maintains an inventory of coupling agent, drugs and other supplies and requisitions and materials, as needed.
3. Obtains sterile instruments, as needed, and returns them to central supply for sterilization and storage.
4. Teaches ultrasound technique to student technologists.
5. Complies with established procedures and policies.
6. Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments, as appropriate, such as cover in Diagnostic Radiology when needed.
7. Must be able to work a variety of shifts and be in the call rotation on a scheduled basis.
8. Able to be on call and in the department within 45 minutes after being called in for a procedure.
9. Must be able to sit or stand for a prolonged period of time in performing the ordered examination (usually 30‐60 minutes for each patient).
10. Performs high level disinfection process according to policy/procedures.
