Job Description

Position Summary:
The Oncology Pharmacist plays a critical role in the safe and effective delivery of cancer care. This position is responsible for the preparation, dispensing, and monitoring of oncology and hematology medications, including chemotherapy and supportive care agents. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and the broader clinical team, the pharmacist ensures compliance with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based best practices. This is a part-time position with flexible scheduling to support the clinic’s infusion operations.

Key Responsibilities:
Pharmaceutical Care & Clinical Oversight:
  • Supervise all Pharm Techs on Chemo mixing. 
  • Enter chemo regimens and prescriptions.
  • Review and verify all oncology medication orders for appropriateness, accuracy, and compliance with treatment protocols. 
  • Prepare, compound, and dispense chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive care medications in accordance with USP <797>/<800> standards. 
  • Monitor patient therapy, assess for drug interactions, side effects, and contraindications, and provide clinical recommendations to optimize outcomes. 
  • Counsel patients and caregivers on medication use, potential side effects, and supportive care measures. 
  • Once a month quality review. 


Formulary Management & Pharmacoeconomics:

  • Conduct regular formulary reviews to evaluate oncology and supportive care medications for clinical effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure formulary alignment with current evidence-based guidelines and practice standards.
  • Provide pharmacoeconomic evaluations to optimize drug utilization, minimize waste, and support cost-effective cancer care.
  • Recommend therapeutic alternatives, generic substitutions, or biosimilars when clinically appropriate to improve value-based care. 


Collaboration & Team Support:

  • Partner with oncologists, advanced practice providers, and nursing staff to ensure safe and coordinated patient care. 
  • Provide guidance on medication dosing adjustments based on organ function, toxicity, or treatment response. 
  • Support infusion center nursing staff with medication handling, administration protocols, and safety checks. 


Regulatory Compliance & Safety:

  • Maintain accurate records for drug preparation, dispensing, and waste in compliance with FDA, DEA, and state board of pharmacy regulations. 
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA, USP, and institutional safety standards for hazardous drug handling. 
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and medication safety reviews. 
  • Maintain clean room per USP 797/800 standards. 


Operational Duties:

  • Assist in inventory management, including procurement, storage, and waste minimization of oncology medications. 
  • Stay current with emerging oncology therapies, guidelines, and clinical research developments.
