Job Description

About Us

The Jewish Leadership Academy is a world-class Jewish Middle and Upper School dedicated to developing the skills, curiosity, and potential of Miami’s most ambitious students for a life of purpose, commitment, and service.

JLA is committed to:

  • Challenging inquisitive minds to think critically and creatively in pursuit of the highest academic standards across all disciplines.
  • Putting values into action by embedding leadership training and community service into the heart of the educational program.
  • Engaging the mind and stirring the soul to connect with the Jewish past and the Jewish present, the Jewish People and the Jewish State, through the broad and embracing lens of Modern Orthodoxy.

JLA seeks an outstanding faculty of all faiths who believe in and actively support the school’s mission to educate Jewish students at the highest academic levels while connecting them deeply to their heritage and faith. We are carefully creating a faculty culture that is values-driven, committed to high standards, and rooted in respect for all. Above all, we seek faculty who have a genuine love for teaching.

History Teaching Faculty

The History Department at JLA will provide students with a strong foundation in the essential subject matter of ancient, American, and World History. Additionally, students will have exposure to civics and economics in upper school. Students will eventually have the opportunity to take electives in the social sciences that might include topics such as History of the Middle East, Modern Jewish History, History of the Americas, Art History, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Human Geography. The focus of the history courses will be to foster critical thinking and depth over breadth. The priority is for students to make connections between countries, cultures, conflicts, and the world today, rather than memorize content. Ideally, social science classes should illuminate the connection between history and the issues of our contemporary society and should hopefully inspire students to get civically involved in their communities.

All classes will be held at an honors level with an option to pursue the same subject at an advanced level. Pedagogical approaches will include Harkness discussions and project-based learning in addition to both traditional and authentic assessments. Evidence-based writing will be a key component of history instruction.

Responsibilities

Full-time employment for faculty teaching positions will commence in August 2025. Responsibilities will include:

  • 20 teaching periods per week (5 periods daily M-Th)
  • Advisory, media literacy, research, service learning, or mentorship role as part of our unique Friday schedule.
  • Tutorial sessions twice weekly
  • Robust professional development throughout the year
  • Special onboarding and leadership programming with students for the first 3 weeks of the school year

Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the middle/upper school level, as well as a strong foundation in classroom pedagogy. He/She must have an undergraduate degree in a related field, though advanced degrees are preferred. Experience working with gifted and talented students is an asset.

In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to connect with and inspire students.
  • The ability and desire to work collaboratively on a high-functioning team.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Mastery of Google Workspace for Education and an overall comfort with technology.

  • The desire to be a part of a learning community.
  • A strong work ethic.
  • A deep understanding of project and inquiry-based learning.
