OVERVIEW :


Under the general supervision of the County Attorney and the Chief Criminal Investigator, engages in criminal investigations as part of the Weber County Attorney's Office. Is responsible for conducting criminal investigations into Officer-Involved Critical Incidents that occur within Weber and Morgan Counties. Is responsible for being a member of the Homicide Task Force within Weber and Morgan Counties.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES :


(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)


Responds to the scene and takes the lead on investigations involving Officer-Involved Critical Incidents. Coordinates with the agency involved to gather all pertinent information necessary for a complete independent investigation.


Responds to the scene of homicides and other critical incidents in Weber and Morgan counties. Works with investigators from venue agencies to successfully solve cases.


Locates and interviews with witnesses, victims, and suspects who have information or are involved in a case.


Serves subpoenas and other legal documents.


Assists prosecuting attorneys in preparing for and presenting trials.


Other duties as assigned.


ABOUT YOU :


Must be a current Utah State law enforcement officer in good standing.


Must have Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST) certification upon date of hire, plus at least five (5) years of experience with a Law Enforcement Agency, of which at least five (2) years must have been spent in an Investigator/Detective position.


Knowledge: Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Modern law enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques; and court procedures and rules of evidence.


Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies and the public in general. This includes the ability, both orally and in writing, to articulate a legal argument or factual statement confidently, concisely, and convincingly.


SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:


Must have a valid Utah Driver's License and a good driving record.


Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate may be required to complete a pre-employment background check prior to starting the position.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :


Experience in working on high stress, high profile investigations. Experience investigating homicides and officer involved critical incidents. Experience working in a task force unit. Experience investigating highly sensitive internal cases. Experience in developing and preparing cases for wiretap investigations and knowledge of practical requirements.

Position Title: Criminal Investigator II


Job Class: 0939-01


Pay Band: WB 23


Must have actively and consistently demonstrated all of the skill, ability, and willingness to perform all duties associated with a Criminal Investigator I position AND meets the experience requirements for a Criminal Investigator II:


Must have Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST) certification upon date of hire, plus at least ten (10) years of experience with a Law Enforcement Agency, of which at least five (5) years must have been spent in an Investigator/Detective position.


Must demonstrate ability to lead investigations involving Officer-Involved Critical Incidents. Coordinates with the agency involved to gather all pertinent information necessary for a complete and independent investigation. Must have previously, successfully investigated a homicide case as case agent or lead detective (case solved, charges filed). May begin to exercise leadership roles in the homicide task force or Officer Involved Critical Incident task force.

Position Title: Criminal Investigator III


Job Class: 0939-01


Pay Band: WB 25


Must have actively and consistently demonstrated all of the skill, ability, and willingness to perform all duties associated with a Criminal Investigator II position AND meets the experience requirements for a Criminal Investigator III:


Must have Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST) certification upon date of hire, plus at least ten (15) years of experience with a Law Enforcement Agency, of which at least five (5) years must have been spent in an Investigator/Detective position.


Must have served as a County Attorney Investigator II for at least three (3) years. Must have demonstrated prior successful ability as a team leader for a homicide taskforce with successful results (case solved, charges filed). Must have served as investigative lead on an Officer Involved Critical Incident and successfully completed a full investigation and summary for the County Attorney.


Must have demonstrable working relationships with the leadership of each major law enforcement department.


Must be able to take over supervision duties in the absence of the Chief Criminal Investigator.
