Job Title: Controller
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Remote (U.S.-based) – Occasional travel (5–10%) required
Salary Range: $110,000 – $150,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
Position Overview
The Controller will oversee the accounting and operations functions of the organization, ensuring compliance, accuracy, and strategic financial leadership. This role requires expertise in nonprofit accounting, Board reporting, audit preparation, grant accounting, and regulatory compliance. The Controller reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with the Board of Directors, serving on both the Audit and Finance Committees.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee accounts payable, payroll, cash receipts, billing, and general ledger activities.
Manage accounting for and reporting on grant revenue and expenditures.
Ensure compliance with banking policies, reconcile monthly bank statements, process transfers and wires, and monitor ACH transactions.
Prepare quarterly financial statements and reports for Board of Directors meetings.
Monitor investment accounts, track cash flows, and report performance to leadership.
Support the Executive Director and Board with financial analysis and decision-making.
Lead the annual budgeting process, including financial projections and variance analysis.
Maintain and update documented accounting policies and procedures.
Ensure internal controls over accounting transactions to mitigate risk.
Audit, Tax, & Compliance
Serve as primary contact for annual audit; provide required documentation and ensure timely completion.
Ensure compliance with regulatory registrations (e.g., SAM, D&B, state licensing, fundraising registration, lobbying disclosures).
Oversee timely and accurate tax filings in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Systems & Operations
Manage and audit the use of accounting software (preferably Great Plains or Dynamics 365).
Supervise the Senior Accountant and support administrative operations, including building-related functions.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA required.
Minimum 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience, preferably with NSF, SAM, and ASAP funding.
Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Proven leadership experience in an accounting or finance department.
Experience with grant accounting and compliance reporting.
Proficiency in accounting software, preferably Great Plains or Dynamics 365.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to prepare, interpret, and present financial reports.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with executive leadership and Board members.
