Role Specifics

The Chief Lending Officer (CLO) plays a pivotal role in driving lending results and shaping the long-term future of a high-performing organization. They are responsible for determining the short-term and long-term Commercial, Consumer, Indirect, and Mortgage Lending and Collections objectives for the organization that drive growth. The CLO is responsible for the development, implementation, and execution of strategic lending initiatives to achieve the organization's objectives in accordance with policies established by the President/CEO and the Board of Directors. The position monitors the lending performance of the organization while assessing market trends, managing risk, and driving revenue growth through innovative lending and collections products and services.

The CLO is a key leader in our team, overseeing all Lending and Collections Operations within the organization. This includes developing, implementing, and managing lending strategies that align with the organization's goals and regulatory requirements. The CLO seeks opportunities to strengthen the organization's Lending and Collections Operations and protect the organization's financial strength. They also collaborate closely with executive management team members, auditors, and regulators.

As part of their leadership responsibilities, the CLO not only leads a team of professionals in key areas such as Commercial, Consumer, Indirect, and Mortgage lending and Collections but also fosters a culture of high-performance and excellence. This ensures that these areas are effectively managed and aligned with the organization's overall objectives, underscoring the CLO's role in maintaining the organization's loan portfolio stability.

Functions and Responsibilities

  • Directs and monitors lending and collections operations for the entire organization, through subordinate leaders, to ensure the organization meets established goals and objectives with respect to lending and collections. Monitors product delivery and quality and takes action to resolve problems.

  • Prepares department reporting, periodic loan and collections department updates, and periodic reports for management's financial and operational reports, including new loan report, asset/liability report, loan officer statistical report, commercial potential problem loans report.

  • Develops, proposes, gains acceptance for and implements lending and collections program policy and strategy; leads activity related to new product development with respect to lending and collections programs.

  • Participates in establishment of annual department budget and monitors performance to budget throughout the year; establishes annual sales goals (in conjunction with marketing) for lending programs and initiates action to achieve established goals.

  • Serves as a member of the Asset/Liability Committee to develop operating procedures that assure the organization maintains sufficient levels of capital, liquidity and pricing spreads.

  • Ensures the organization is in compliance with all lending and collections regulations; develops procedural changes as compliance requires or new programs demand.

Performance Measurements

  • Develops effective strategic plans for Commercial, Consumer, Indirect, and Mortgage lending and Collections that support the organization's overall strategic plan. Allocates and aligns resources to meet plan objectives. Incorporates organizational priorities, strategies, goals, industry trends, and market viability.

  • Performance of the Loan Portfolio within the confines of organization policies and procedures. Monitoring the detailed reports necessary to make sound decisions.

  • Ensures that divisions are meeting production goals. Coordinates all collections and lending programs, i.e., mortgage, indirect, consumer, and commercial, implements loan promotions, and communicates new programs and changes to policies to ensure that all lending activity is within established policies and regulations.

  • Direct reports receive leadership, and coaching and evaluations provide value, hold the team accountable, and help the organization become a high-performing Institution.

  • Complies with all applicable rules, regulations, and policies, including but not limited to BSA, OFAC, and Physical Security.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ten plus years of progressively responsible experience in managing Lending functions, including experience in Mortgage and Indirect. Experience in Commercial is a plus. Minimum five years of senior executive management experience.

  • (1) A bachelor's degree, or (2) achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).

  • Motivating or influencing others is a material part of the position, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust at all levels of the organization. Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an integral part of the position, and a high level of interpersonal skills is critical to success. Work frequently involves contacts requiring considerable discussion of problems, material presentations, and resolving issues impacting other units.
