Job Description

CARBONATED JOB POSTING: Tech/Modular Artist

THE STUDIO (AKA ABOUT US)

Carbonated is a games studio founded in 2015 by industry veterans who’ve built and run some of the biggest games in the world at companies like EA, Sony and Zynga. We’re fortunate to be backed by some of the best partners in the world, including a16z, Bitkraft and Com2Us.

Our culture is based around a shared love of playing and building games as well as experimenting together. We do work extremely hard, but we’re trying to build something we can all be proud of.

Ultimately, we aspire to have a company where people want to spend their entire careers. As you may have guessed, we want to bring on folks who share our key values:

  • Talent (you're a subject matter expert and amazing individual contributor!)
  • Attitude (you want to win! sure, experience is important, but that’s only part of what makes a great contributor, great)
  • Willingness to try new and sometimes scary things (so we can ship something we're all proud of!)

We’re fortunate enough to be working on our dream game MadWorld , which is pioneering new methods to blend web2 & web3 gameplay, all in a real-time global PvP battler (think if The Division had a baby with Eve Online ) with a few fun twists!

THE ROLE (AKA ABOUT YOU)

You’re excited to build worlds piece by piece — crafting modular systems that empower artists and designers to quickly create beautiful, optimized, and reusable environments. You thrive on creating versatile kits of parts (buildings, props, structural elements) and setting up smart workflows that balance art direction with technical constraints.

You’re comfortable in Blender’s Geometry Nodes, Maya’s Python tools, or O3DE’s ScriptCanvas (or Unreal’s Blueprint-style workflows). You’re not a full-time programmer, but you can think procedurally and know how to set up systems that make building worlds fast, efficient, and fun.

WHAT YOU’LL DO (AKA YOUR DAY-TO-DAY)

  • Build modular environment prefab kits (buildings, interiors, props, architectural sets) optimized for mobile games.
  • Use node-based and procedural workflows (Blender Geometry Nodes, Maya scripts, ScriptCanvas, or similar tools) to create scalable and flexible assets.
  • Collaborate with level designers and world builders to ensure assets snap together cleanly and support rapid iteration.
  • Create efficient UV layouts, PBR materials, and instanced textures to maximize performance.
  • Ensure modular assets are optimized for mobile performance (draw calls, texture memory, LODs).
  • Help develop workflows and best practices for modular environment creation.
  • Troubleshoot art integration issues in-engine and work closely with engineers to solve problems.
WHO YOU ARE

  • You think in systems and building blocks rather than one-off assets.
  • You enjoy problem-solving and finding the most efficient way to build a scene.
  • You can balance artistic vision with technical constraints — and make it look effortless.
  • You collaborate easily across art, design, and engineering.
  • You’re a passionate gamer who understands how the look and feel of a game world impacts immersion.

WHAT’S REQUIRED (AKA YA GOTTA HAVE THIS)

  • Professional experience in a game engine like Unity, Unreal, or O3DE.
  • Strong 3D modeling skills in Blender or Maya, with a focus on modular design.
  • Experience with node-based workflows (Geometry Nodes, ScriptCanvas, Blueprints, or similar).
  • Comfort with Python scripting in Maya or Blender for automation and tools.
  • Knowledge of environment art fundamentals: scale, proportion, tiling textures, trim sheets, and modular workflows.
  • Understanding of mobile performance constraints and asset optimization.
  • 2+ years experience as an Environment Artist, Modular Artist, or Technical Artist in games.
  • Strong sense of form, design, composition, and lighting.
EXTRA CREDIT

  • Experience shipping a mobile or console/PC title.
  • Familiarity with procedural workflows in Houdini or similar tools.
  • Experience with Substance Designer/Painter or material authoring pipelines.
  • Comfort with level design collaboration (grayboxing, world building).
  • Knowledge of LOD setup, instancing, and batching.
  • You like working on a small team that iterates quickly.
  • You’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves and make tools/assets that benefit the entire team.

SOUND LIKE YOU?

Really? Awesome! Send your resume and cover letter to [email protected]!
